Netherlands PhD Position in Raman Spectroscopy at Delft University of Technology

Posting :

Expired : 31-07-2007

Job Location : Netherlands, Delft University of Technology

The PhD candidate will develop Raman spectroscopy down to the single molecule level using photonic crystals. A quarter of a century ago it could take an expert several hours to record a single Raman spectrum of a highly purified concentrated solution of a biological molecule. Today spectra of tissue can be obtained in vivo in a matter of seconds, with instant signal analysis, and by operators with a minimum of training.

This project takes the next step and applies this technique to extremely small concentrations of molecules in a very compact setup, achieved by utilising integrated optics and photonic crystals. The project is a collaboration between several Dutch universities and three small companies. The Delft part of the project will focus on utilisation of a high-Q cavity state in the photonic band-gap which allows for extreme field enlargement. Such a cavity state will also be used to improve the laser performance of the excitation signal. The devices will be fabricated in the recently-erected Nanofacility of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, which is a national centre.

Requirements

University Graduate
Applicants should preferably be experimental physicists with a background in solid-state physics and/or nanophysics and nanotechnology. Experience in opto-electronics or nanophotonics is helpful.

Delft University of Technology is a bilingual organisation; a good command of English (written and oral) is essential, while good Dutch is also preferred.

Organization

Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Section Photronic Devices of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience

Delft University of Technology is a multifaceted institution offering education and conducting research within the technical sciences at an internationally recognised level. Education, research and designs are strongly oriented towards social applicability. TU Delft develops technologies for future generations, focusing on sustainability, safety and economic vitality. At TU Delft, you will work in an environment in which technical sciences and society converge. TU Delft comprises eight faculties, the Assistant Staff Office, unique laboratories, research institutes and schools.

Faculty of Applied Sciences is a large, research-oriented faculty providing excellent, challenging education and conducting pioneering, cutting-edge fundamental research of great societal relevance in the natural sciences.

It provides a world-class training ground for future leaders in scientific professional practice and research. With more than 60 different nationalities studying and working together, its environment is enriched and culturally diverse. The Kavli Institute of Nanoscience is one of the seven departments of the Faculty.

Section Photronic Devices of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience

The section Photronic Devices concentrates on the physics of devices operating on the basis of control of photonic and electronic waves at the nanoscale. In particular, use is made of photonic bandgap materials (photonic crystals) and inorganic semiconductors for new optical and electrical device operation. Phenomena in devices made from these systems exhibit both interesting similarities and differences, while in either case doping is essential for device functionality.
